Another gem to emerge from the ranks of Standard Liege, youngster Axel Witsel already looks set to join former team-mate Marouane Fellaini in seeking pastures new, with a strong contingent of European giants already earmarking him as the next prospect worth snaring from the Belgian League Champions. He has an expressive, charismatic style on the pitch, putting defences on the back foot with his mazy dribbling that is surprisingly elegant considering his height. One of the young midfielder's most impressive qualities, despite his dribbling, touch and command over the ball is his versatility, and whilst his natural position is in on the right flank, he has proven equally competent at playing on the left or across the centre of midfield. His assuredness with both feet has certainly helped him here, and coupled with considerable pace and an eye for goal, he looks like a wonderful prospect that is sure to command at least the same transfer fee as Fellaini (£15 million) when he moves on.
He was a key member of Liege's title-winning team of 07-08, after making his debut at 17. He has represented Belgium at every level of their youth setup, and is now part of their full senior squad after earning his first call-up in March 2008.
