Can money really buy instant success?
by modricgibbs on 18/07/2010

In the Modern game of football Money can be considered as important as the ball itself!. With this in mind one might think that having the key to a wealthy bank account goes hand in hand with having the key to a packed trophy cabinet, However is this really the case in modern football.

If we look back over the last 10 years of the English Premiership, you would be able to see that there have only been three different champions. These being Manchester United (6 time winners) Chelsea (3 times) and Arsenal (Once). from looking at this it is safe to say that for this period these have been three of the wealthiest clubs in the league, However was their success due to the money in which they spent. There will be people who will argue conclusively that the only reason these teams have been in such dominance is down to the fact that they have had more money than any other teams therefore can buy the best players. In my personal opinion the success of these three teams is down to much more than money. For example winning a title isn't all about signing the best players in the game, Granted you need one or two top class players however there are other major factors to consider such as; creating a winning atmosphere, being able to gell together a squad of players that play well together and that actually want to play together as a team to achieve a common goal. Looking further into this if you looked back on the last ten years at each championship winning side, you wouldn't see that team with a list of the best 16 or 17 players around, what you would in fact see is a team that has formed being the best at the time at playing together as a combined unit.

The people who make these comments about money being the deciding factor in terms of winning a league, show great naivity. Are these people suggesting that if a team that has never had any previous success was handed the same amount of cash to buy players that manchester united or chelsea have would therefore be able to go and win a title?. Using Manchester United as the best example as they have won 6 league titles in the last 10 seasons, their success as a team has been down to so many more things that money, to start Alex ferguson (the manager) has been and still is one of the finest football figures ever to be associated with the game. in saying this i am attempting to put across that not any football coach can win a title with just a great some of money.

Coming into real modern times, talking about the last 2 or 3 years, Manchester City are infact now the richest club in the premiership yet their last 3 league finishes have been outside of the top spot, outside of the top four spots in fact. City for me is a great example that money cannot bring instant success, City in the last 3 years have spent more than any other club in the premiership by quite a considerable margin and are still yet to break into the top four. This must go to show that simply signing big name players and spending excessive amounts on transfers doesn't create an instant winning team. Of course With manchester city's recent cash injection they have improved on former league positions but not by a giant step and they certaintly haven't possed a strong challenge for the title. I think this goes to show that actually money and large transfer spendings isn't necessarily the most important factor in becomming a sucessful title winnindg side.
